MAIS is a consulting partnership between Susan Josselyn and Dan Presse. We occasionally work with other associates to round out the team, as required. On any given client engagement, depending on the scope and your preference, you may only work directly with one of us. However, we utilize a collaborative approach involving ongoing consultation and pooling of expertise to better serve your needs.

Susan likes to connect with people. She is an effective listener who taps into what people really think and what they care about most.
Susan founded MAIS in 2001 to provide management consulting services to small to medium size businesses and the not-for-profit sector in the Ottawa area. She has a wealth of experience in conducting broad-scope reviews as well as specific inquiries and investigations including OD initiatives and third-party opinion reports.
Before founding MAIS, Susan served as Director of Internal Audit for the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton where she reorganized the comprehensive/value-for-money audit function to incorporate internal investigations, organizational reviews, management advisory and consulting services.
Susan’s background includes executive search, management assessment, and educational counselling. Susan holds a Workplace Investigations Certificate from the HRPA-Osgoode Hall Law School professional development program. She is currently completing studies in professional coaching with the Adler Institute, and is pursuing ICF certification.
Dan enjoys working collaboratively with managers. He believes that even the best managers need to feel they have backup, time to recover and a coach they can trust. Dan joined MAIS after more than 25 years in the municipal auditing field. He most recently served as Deputy Auditor General at the City of Ottawa from 2004 to 2013. In addition to overseeing projects, Dan played a key role in the strategic direction of the Office of the Auditor General including development of the annual audit plan, writing annual reports and all related press releases as well as preparing and delivering presentations to City Council and its committees.
Dan’s experience at the City of Ottawa and the former Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton included conducting and managing comprehensive and performance audits and various investigations in all areas of municipal government. Highlights included governance reviews of both the Ottawa Police Services Board and the Ottawa Public Library Board; audits within the Ottawa Police Service, Fire Service and Paramedics Service; Environmental Services including Drinking Water and Waste Water; Ottawa Public Health; Social Services including Ontario Works, Long-term Care and Children’s Services; By-Law and Building Code Services. Audits of corporate administrative areas included Facilities, Fleet, Information Technology, Performance Measurement, and the 3-1-1 Contact Centre.
Our combined experience means that we can offer clients significant consulting knowledge and expertise. We have worked in a variety of settings including educational institutions, social services, not-for-profit organizations, municipal and regional governments, and a wide range of operations and administrative functions.
Where the situation demands, we are adept at addressing sensitive issues that require discretion and objectivity, and can assist with independent projects that depend on an arms-length relationship and confidentiality. We are equally comfortable working closely and collaboratively with management, staff and stakeholders at all levels. We are strong communicators and skilled interviewers who are accomplished at soliciting feedback, information and opinions, and are experienced in the provision of management advisory letters and formal detailed reports which provide feedback, information, insight, findings of fact, evidence, advice, and/or formal recommendations, as required.
We enjoy working with people at all levels. Coaching services are available on an individual or team basis, and, if desired, can be paired with consulting services to further facilitate the resolution of concerns or implementation of improvements.
Over the years, MAIS has provided a range of investigative, consulting and coaching services to organizations in the private, non-profit, and local government sectors in the Ottawa and Toronto area. Client projects have included formal workplace investigations, organizational reviews, operational audits, organizational design, job design, business case development, and performance management processes, coaching and management support. Our work has involved consultation with executive, management and staff levels, focus groups, feedback surveys, multiple employee contacts across the organization, input from external stakeholders and counterpart contacts in organizations across the country and abroad.
